This is our second report of what is going on at the job site for the new Upper School. Much has happened over the last month, as you will notice the next time you stop by! The excavation of the basement is nearly complete, leaving a large 11’ deep hole where the basement will be. You will also notice the large mound of dirt, which will be used to “backfill” during the construction process. We are fortunate to have good soil to work with on the property, which we were able to keep and re-use instead of purchasing new fill material later.
We had only one small glitch during the excavation process. Silver Rain uncovered a small underground fuel tank, likely the remnant of a house on the property even before it became a nursing home. We contacted the proper authorities and hired a professional company to empty the tank, remove it, and remove soil from around the tank to ensure that our building site is clean.
July will bring the start of active construction. First, the surveyors will arrive again and place flags at the precise location where the building elevator is to be placed. A drilling contractor will then arrive to bore a large hole for the casement for the elevator. You will notice that there is a “road” that drops down into the foundation hole, which the drilling contractor will use to get its equipment into place.
Pearson Construction will then prepare the site to pour the foundation footings for the building and the floor slab itself. Over one million dollars in concrete work goes into this project. Steel rebar will be delivered, and the actual building will start to take shape!
You will also see a lot of mobilization activity. Triad Electric will arrive to install temporary power facilities (as well as electric service to the new portable building). Construction trailers will begin to arrive during late July or early August.
Our building permit application for the new classroom portable is currently under review by the City of Bellingham. We anticipate approval of the permit no later than July 10. The portable building is scheduled to arrive on July 14. The portable will be assembled and connected to electricity, and a sidewalk leading to it installed well before the start of school in the fall.
In the August report, we will discuss installation of the new temporary parking lot and new student pickup and drop-off procedures during building construction.
