UP! UP! Great day, today! Great day for UP! Up stairs! Up ladders! Up! Folks! Up in elevators! -- Dr. Seuss
As you can see on the webcam, the first floor steel deck has been laid, the utility passages have been cut and piped, the rebar has been laid and tied and the concrete floor has been poured. The foundation has now been waterproofed completely, backfilling is complete, and the mounds of dirt in the back of the lot are gone.
Time to climb!
Over the next four weeks, Gracom will return to complete the east and west stairwells, the elevator shaft, and the bell tower. The towers are made with concrete block that is reinforced with steel rebar and concrete. Every four feet, work on the towers stops for an inspection and pouring of concrete into the holes. Then, four more feet up! The towers are an integral part of the seismic support system for the building. Thus, they will be built first, and then the structural steel will attach to them. We will begin to see the actual size of the building!
While that is going on, general contractor Strengholt will finish installing the steel stairs down to the basement, finish the foundation footings for the southwest exterior wall and pour the wall itself. This wall will be the exterior of the sprinkler riser room, the storage rooms and garbage bin areas. Blythe will return to do the underground plumbing fixtures, then Strengholt will do the preparation to pour the gym floor. Blythe will work on the basement plumbing, and Dale’s Electric will work on the basement electrical rough in. Then, VanBeek drywall will arrive to begin framing the basement walls.
Many more truckloads of steel will arrive for the beams to the second floor, third floor and roof. The goal is to have all of the steel assembly done while our students are away for the summer. When the students return after Labor Day, the frame for the three upper stories should be in place!
As of June 30, 2010, the building is 21% complete. Total cost to date is $ 1,765,268.77. Projected completion date remains April 10, 2011.
