Academics

Upper School

The academic program at the Upper School (Grades 6 – 10) aims to graduate motivated young scholars who are ready to produce excellent work at any fine college or university. To that end, we offer broad, rigorous training in the liberal arts and sciences. We stress independent thinking, writing, critical reading, self-discipline, and creativity.

Middle School (Grades 6 – 8)

At each grade level, the language and social studies curricula focus on a central subject, such as a period in history, a group of people, or a concept. Other disciplines (e.g., Science, Math, Art) can either be studied through the central subject or can leverage the central subject to augment a standard curriculum and expand thinking. This flexible program integrates diverse subjects and excites learning. Through a natural process, it helps students become better researchers and scholars.

Upper School Travel

St. Paul's Academy extends academic learning through unique travel experiences. Travel — at its best — allows for further exploration of central subjects and introduces students to cultures and customs different from their own. Students experience new ways of communicating and new ways of seeing.

Students Grade 6 and above embark on an annual adventure:

  • 6th Graders enjoy four days on Canoe Island in the San Juan Islands to experience/study the island environment, Native culture, and explorers.
  • 7th Graders spend three days on the Olympic Peninsula where they experience/study forest ecology, watershed science, and cooperative outdoor skills.
  • 8th Graders travel 11 days to London, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Oxford, and Salisbury to experience/study British culture, history, and literature.
  • 9th Graders enjoy eight days in Montreal, Canada where they experience/study the French language and culture.
