Chess Club

Why play chess?  Chess is fun!  Chess introduces you to people from a variety of cultures. Chess is popular the world over, especially in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Asia. Check out the website below for evidence of this:

  • Chess makes you smart.
  • Elementary School Chess gives you information about tournaments, chess camps and other local chess activity, as well as links to other chess-related links.
  • Chess House is a website for a Lynden company that sells chess stuff—in case you need a chess set or book or software. They are usually quick, reliable, helpful and inexpensive.
  • Chess Magnet is a wonderful teaching tool for chess—for any player from beginner to advanced. It is free for the first thirty days, and about $30.00 per year after that. You need Java to use it.

Chess at St. Paul’s Academy

There are three chess classes taught at St. Paul’s Academy: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. These classes are taught by Ethan Neff. St. Paul’s students participate in several tournaments a year. These include five or six local tournaments as well as a state tournament that meets in various parts of Washington State (Spokane in 2009). Our students have performed exceptionally well in these tournaments.

Here’s a sample of our record:

  • 2005 April: Colton Carpenter: Kindergarten state champion
  • 2007 April: K-3 team 19th at the WA state championships
  • 2007 December: SPA K-4 team 1st at the Skagit Chess-Fest
  • 2008 January SPA K-2 team 2nd at the Whatcom County Championship
  • 2008 February SPA 2-3 team 1st place; 4-5 team 2nd at the International Chess Jam in Ferndale
  • 2008 March: SPA K-3 team 1st at the Assumption tournament in Bellingham
  • 2008 November: SPA K-5 team 1st at the Carl Crozier Chess Kick-off
  • 2008 December: SPA K-4 team second place at the Lynden Christian Christmas Chess Classic.
